Osteoporosis
is a common metabolic bone disorder, related to aging, characterized
by a decrease in bone density, diminished bone strength. Osteoporosis
is a silent disease often underrecognized and undertreated. Fracture
may be the only manifestation, making osteoporosis a major contributer
to morbidity and mortality.
Osteoporosis can be prevented to some extent by means of healthy
diet, moderate exercise and medical treatment. Disabilty caused
by musculoskeletal disorders such as osteoporosis and its related
bone fracture, osteoarthritis can be prevented by early action to
resist the development. We would like to offer self-care program
as follows.

|
1) |
Recognizing and treating osteoporosis
It is vital to evaluate the degree of osteoporosis by means of medical
history, imaging studies for quantification, blood examination for
examining the speed of bone resorption. Healthy dieat, moderate
exercise should be combined with appropriate medical treatment such
as bisphosphonate.
|
2)
|
Exercise
Both bone and muscle deteriorate with age especially after 60s.
Exercise, especially weight-bearing exercise will maintain or increase
the quality and quantity of bone and muscle. Balancing enhancing
programs are highly recommended.
|
3) |
Exercise for arthritic pain
Proper exercise will decrease the symptom of osteoarthritis and
rheumatoid arthritis, and so it should be combined with medical
treatment.
|
4) |
Individualizing the rehabilitation program
Since musculoskeletal disorders are characterized by variability
among the patients, the rehabilitation program should be individualized
. Exercise program should be combined with cold therapy, heat therapy
or traction therapy and mobilization.
